Not just an issue for astrophotographers - a petition to address light pollution
September 15, 2025I’ve been interested and concerned about the effects of light pollution for some time now so I was pleased to see there’s a petition calling on the Australian Government to legislate to limit light pollution. The petition is open to Australian citizens and residents and closes 19 September 2025.

While many might not think this is an important issue, or only affects astronomers and observing the night sky, the skies are increasingly affected by unnecessary lighting and light pollution which harms vulnerable wildlife and human health, wastes energy and subsequently contributes to climate change.
Countries such as France, Germany and Croatia have already successfully introduced legislation to limit light pollution and artificial light at night and it would be wonderful if Australia could do the same, protecting our environments and health as well as the pristine darkness itself.
It only takes a minute so please consider signing the petition to show Australians care about protecting the night sky.
